Ala’a’s Priorities

Practical action, accountable leadership, and a fair chance for every family in Etobicoke North.

01 · Strong neighbourhoods

Safe and healthy communities

The issue: A safe community means residents get a real seat at the table when development and opportunity come to their neighbourhood.

Ala'a will fight for: A community-safety-led approach, with residents taking part in development and sharing in the opportunity and prosperity it brings.

02 · Every child ready to learn

Student nutrition

The issue: Kids can’t learn hungry, and a program only helps if it reaches their school.

Progress: Council approved about $31.17 million in municipal funding for student nutrition in 2026, including 78 new school communities in the latest expansion phase. The goal is a universal morning meal in every Toronto school community by 2026/27, with a universal lunch program by 2030.

The job at City Hall: Defend that funding in every budget and track whether it’s reaching the schools in her ward.

Ala'a will fight for: Protect the investment, make sure Ward 1 schools actually see the benefit, and close any gaps that remain.

03 · Places that bring us together

Community spaces

The issue: Gyms and community spaces across Ward 1 have gone without repairs, and two proposed community centres still aren’t fully funded.

The job at City Hall: Put repairs and the two centres into the City’s capital budget and fight for them at budget time.

Ala'a will fight for: Fix the spaces we already have, and get both proposed community centres fully funded and built.

04 · Growth that works for us

Good jobs and responsible development

The issue: Harmful developments are being proposed for Ward 1, and residents shouldn’t have to accept them.

The job at City Hall: Vote on planning applications and negotiate for community benefits and local hiring.

Ala'a will fight for: Healthy communities and good local jobs as the test for every development decision, so growth benefits the people who live here.

05 · A home people can afford

Affordable housing

The issue: Housing is hurting Ward 1 families, and too many residents are stuck in older housing that isn't good enough.

The job at City Hall: Vote on rezoning and approvals for housing on City land, and press the school board and other public agencies to make land available.

Ala'a will fight for: More new affordable homes on public land in Ward 1, including land around schools, and better conditions for the people already living in older housing.

06 · Respect for renters

Safe, well-maintained apartment buildings

The issue: Tenants in aging buildings live with repairs that don’t get done, and repeat offenders face few consequences.

Progress: Since June 15, each RentSafeTO building has been assigned a green, yellow or red sign based on its latest score, and the lowest-scoring 2.5 per cent of buildings each year are prioritized for audit. The 2026 budget funds 73 officers for RentSafeTO enforcement.

The job at City Hall: Vote on the bylaw and the enforcement budget, escalate tenant complaints to City staff, and hold meetings in buildings that score poorly.

Ala'a will fight for: Stronger enforcement, faster reinspections when a building scores yellow or red, and real accountability for repeat-offender landlords.
